To reach our target of 30,000!

Planted Shrubs (Aug 21)
Carbon neutral by 2030
Background: Congleton Town Council (CTC) declared a climate emergency in September 2019 with plans to be carbon neutral by 2030. This is an ambitious target and to help achieve it, the CTC through the Community, Social and Environmental Committee has agreed to support a tree planting project in Congleton and the surrounding area. As you are aware, trees absorb carbon dioxide by the process of photosynthesis to make sugar which is used as food for the tree. This sequestration of carbon will help to achieve our goal of reducing the volume of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Working group: A small group has been set up under the umbrella of the Congleton Sustainability Group (CSG) with the support of Cheshire Wildlife Trust and the advice of an experienced landscape architect to plan and manage the project. We are also working with Ruth Burgess, manager of Streetscape.
Aim: Our goal is to plant 30,000 trees, shrubs and hedgerows in the Congleton area over the next 5 years. Some of these trees will be on land owned by Cheshire East (CEC), but ultimately we hope that private landowners and individuals will get involved. In the limited time available this year before our first planting opportunity (winter 2019-2020) we have identified 3 sites.
The sites are:
- Marshall Grove play area, Mossley – 137 trees
- Padgbury Lane – 278 trees
- Quinta Play area – 182 trees
Recording Document: We aim to keep an updated record of planting / planned planting so that everyone can see where we are at versus the planned target. If anyone plants a tree to support this initiative please let us know by emailing us on email@example.com
